New Delhi Railway Station Stampede News Live Updates: With at least 18 people killed in a stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday evening, the Congress party has demanded the resignation of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and take moral responsibility for the tragic incident. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said if Vaishnaw does not resign, he should be sacked for the “mismanagement” at the railway station. The Railway Ministry has announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased. The ministry has also declared that the victims with grievous injuries will receive Rs 2.5 lakh whereas those with minor bruises will get Rs 1 lakh.

Action taken so far: A high-level committee began their probe into the incident on Sunday. The team has secured all CCTV footage of the station, and called in eye-witnesses, Narsingh Deo, one of the members told The Indian Express. According to the fire officials, four fire tenders were pressed to service on Saturday after the department received distress calls about a stampede on platforms 14 and 15 around 9.55 pm. The injured were rushed to Lok Nayak Hospital.

What could have led to the stampede: Elaborating on the matter, DCP, Railways, KPS Malhotra said with the Prayagraj Express on platform number 14, a lot of people had gathered. Passengers of Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani were also present at platforms 12, 13 and 14 as the trains were delayed, he said, adding, “As per our information, 1,500 general tickets were sold (every hour), which is why the crowd became uncontrollable.”
